Design & Technology

DT at Wortley

The Design and Technology course allows you to build upon your prior skills and experience within the “applied design” sector.

The course provides training in resistant materials, electronics and communications technologies (ECT - formerly known as systems and control) and food technology.

You will specialise in one of these areas at Key Stage 4 (GCSE). You will train to teach either resistant materials and ECT or just Food Technology at Key Stage 3 (Ages 11-14). You will also attend subject training sessions planned to support your designing and making skills. There may also be opportunities for you to enhance other D&T areas.

At this time we do not offer specialist training for textiles technology, but can support those applicants with a textiles background - you will specialise in another area but will gain experience teaching textiles during your teaching placements.

More information about training to teach D&T at the secondary level can be found at www.data.org.uk

Schools within the SCITT already afford specific opportunities for design and technology based activities. The SCITT makes best use of these opportunities to provide you with a different teacher-training experience from that of other providers - an experience that is rooted firmly in the real-world.

Over time you will have the chance to work with pupils in order to support their use of planning and design tools and their selection and use of tools including new technologies.

You will gain knowledge and experience of managing the design & technology workspace safely when pupils are designing, creating and testing products, systems and structures.
